✦ About the Rhyme ✦

The First “Roses Are Red”

This verse appeared in Gammer Gurton’s Garland, a collection of nursery rhymes printed in 1784. It is an ancestor of the famous valentine “Roses are red, violets are blue.”

In old times, people sometimes drew names to choose a valentine, which is what “I drew thee to my Valentine” means. It is a sweet verse to share with someone you love.
