✦ About the Rhyme ✦

A Riddle Rhyme

“Humpty Dumpty” first appeared in print around 1800, and it was originally a riddle. The rhyme never says what Humpty is, so listeners had to guess what could fall and never be put back together. The answer is an egg.

Humpty became so famous as an egg that Lewis Carroll gave him a starring role in Through the Looking-Glass in 1871, sitting on a wall and arguing with Alice about words.
