The Little Red Hen

A traditional folktale. This is a short summary, not the full text. Watch the read-aloud above to hear the whole story.

The Little Red Hen found some grains of wheat. “Who will help me plant this wheat?” she asked. “Not I,” said the cat. “Not I,” said the dog. “Not I,” said the duck. “Then I will do it myself,” said the Little Red Hen, and she did.

When the wheat was ripe, she asked who would help her cut it, then who would help carry it to the mill, then who would help bake the flour into bread. Each time her friends said, “Not I,” and each time the Little Red Hen did the work herself.

At last the bread came out of the oven, warm and golden. “Who will help me eat this bread?” asked the Little Red Hen. “I will!” said the cat, the dog, and the duck. “No,” said the Little Red Hen, “I shall eat it myself.” And she did.

✦ About the Story ✦

From Seed to Bread

“The Little Red Hen” is a traditional folktale that became a favorite in American school readers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its repeating pattern makes it one of the best stories for young children learning to read along.

The story follows wheat all the way from seed to bread, and its lesson is simple: those who help with the work can share in the reward.
