The Little Engine That Could

A classic American story. This is a short summary, not the full text. Watch the read-aloud above to hear the whole story.

A happy little train was carrying toys and good things to eat to the children on the other side of the mountain, when its engine suddenly broke down. The toys climbed out and waited for help.

The little toy clown waved his flag for help. A shiny passenger engine came by, but he was too proud to pull a little train. A big freight engine came by, but he was too important. A rusty old engine came by, but he was too tired. Each one said no.

At last a little blue engine came along. She was very small and had never been over the mountain, but she thought of the children waiting on the other side. Puffing hard, she pulled the train up and up the mountain, saying, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.” And she did. As she puffed down the other side, she seemed to say, “I thought I could, I thought I could.”

✦ About the Story ✦

I Think I Can

Versions of this story were told in America in the early 1900s, and the best-known picture book version was published in 1930 under the pen name Watty Piper. It has been read to generations of children ever since.

The little engine’s chant, “I think I can,” has become a famous saying about believing in yourself and trying hard, even when a job seems too big.
