Jack and the Beanstalk

An English fairy tale, as told by Joseph Jacobs, 1890. This is a short summary, not the full text. Watch the read-aloud above to hear the whole story.

Jack and his mother were so poor that they had to sell their cow, Milky-White. On the way to market Jack met a strange old man who offered him five magic beans for the cow, and Jack agreed. His mother was so cross that she threw the beans out of the window and sent Jack to bed without supper.

In the morning, a giant beanstalk had grown up past the clouds. Jack climbed it and found a great house where an ogre lived. The ogre’s wife hid Jack, and he heard the ogre roar, “Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!” When the ogre fell asleep, Jack took a bag of gold and climbed home. Later he climbed again and took a hen that laid golden eggs, and then a golden harp that sang by itself.

But the harp cried out, “Master! Master!” and the ogre woke and chased Jack down the beanstalk. Jack called for an axe and chopped the beanstalk down, and the ogre came tumbling after. With the golden eggs and the singing harp, Jack and his mother were never poor again.

✦ About the Story ✦

Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum

Joseph Jacobs (1854–1916) collected and retold English folk tales, and his version of “Jack and the Beanstalk” in English Fairy Tales (1890) became the best known. The story itself is much older and was already being told in print in the 1700s.

Jack is a classic folk-tale hero: poor, a little foolish, but brave and quick-thinking. The ogre’s famous chant, “Fee-fi-fo-fum,” is one of the most recognizable lines in all of fairy tales.
