✦ About the Rhyme ✦

A Tongue Twister

“Peter Piper” was printed in 1813 in a little book called Peter Piper’s Practical Principles of Plain and Perfect Pronunciation, which had a tongue twister for every letter of the alphabet.

A peck is an old measure, about a big basketful. The rhyme is meant for practicing the “p” sound, and the challenge is to say it faster and faster without tripping.
