Traditional English nursery rhyme. Public domain.

Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater, Had a wife and couldn’t keep her; He put her in a pumpkin shell, And there he kept her very well.

✦ About the Rhyme ✦

A Pumpkin-Shell House

“Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater” first appeared in print in America in the early 1800s. That suits it well: pumpkins first grew in North America, and they were a familiar harvest crop for American families.

The rhyme is really a bit of nonsense. Peter can’t find a home that suits his wife, so he hollows out a giant pumpkin, and the two of them live in it very happily. Children love to imagine what a pumpkin house would look like inside, with round orange walls and a stem for a chimney.
