✦ About the Rhyme ✦

Quick on Your Feet

“Jack Be Nimble” dates back to at least the early 1800s. “Nimble” means quick and light on your feet.

Jumping over candles was once an old game and a way of telling fortunes: if the candle stayed lit, good luck was coming. Today children love to act the rhyme out by jumping over a pretend candlestick, or a block or a pillow.
