✦ About the Rhyme ✦

Up the Hill

“Jack and Jill” has been printed since the 1760s and is one of the best-known rhymes in English. Here “crown” means the top of Jack’s head, not a king’s crown.

It is a little odd to climb a hill to find water, since wells and streams are usually at the bottom, and people have long joked about it. Later verses, added over the years, tell how Jack got home and had his head mended with vinegar and brown paper.
