✦ About the Rhyme ✦

The Mouse and the Clock

“Hickory Dickory Dock” has been printed since the 1740s. The opening words are nonsense sounds, possibly meant to imitate the tick-tock of a big old clock.

The clock in the rhyme is the tall kind once found in front halls, sometimes called a grandfather clock. Children often add new verses, with the clock striking two, three, and four, and a new animal each time.
